Description

The Project aims at complete renewal of the City’s trolleybus fleet by financing the acquisition of up to 50 modern, low-floor, energy efficient and environmentally friendly trolleybuses and associated maintenance equipment. 10 new trolleybuses, financed by the project investment, will be used to restore public transport services on an isolated district on the right bank of the City. The local contribution will finance renovating the trolleybus infrastructure in this district.

Alongside the investment in trolleybus fleet renewal the City plans to re-organise the existing route network to achieve greater efficiency and reduce emissions by better responding to the demand with sufficient frequencies and capacity of vehicles. This project should reduce current inefficiencies related to the overlap of services, further improve public transport speed and capacity utilisation and promote quality of services.

The City incorporates climate change and environmental considerations into their decision making progress, in order to increase the services for the inhabitants in an affordable, healthy and environmentally friendly way.

Benefits

Restoring clean transport (such as trolleybuses) in the City will improve air quality and reduce pollution, which will result in environmental and public health benefits (reduction in premature human mortality and disability resulting from respiratory, coronary and cancerous diseases). This is very critical for such an industrial city as Kremenchuk.

The project should promote environmentally sound and sustainable municipal development, and will result in considerable CO2 equivalent emission reductions, including emission of particulate matter also known as black carbon or soot generated in vast quantity as a result of operation of obsolete diesel buses and old cars.

Modal shift to clean public transport as opposed to private cars will reduce the amount of polluting air emissions, especially particulate matter (“PM”), including black carbon, and nitrous oxides (“NOx”). The reduction of black carbon (“PM2.5“) is especially important. The Project will result in calculated savings of EUR 2.62 million arising from the reduction of toxic emissions.
