Restoring water in Mykolaiv

Date : 03-09-2025

One morning in April 2022, people in Mykolaiv turned their taps to find that they were dry. Russian attacks overnight had left them with no water for weeks. They had to rely on improvised wells and water trucked in from Odesa. Trams were converted into mobile water stations. Hospitals depended on volunteer deliveries to keep dialysis machines running.

Since then, the city has managed to recover part of its supply – but the system remains fragile.

A €33.8 million emergency programme supported by an E5P grant and an EBRD loan is rebuilding the city’s water infrastructure. The project will ensure the safe and reliable supply of water for hundreds of thousands of people in Mykolaiv.
