Reliable water for Chortkiv

Date : 26-09-2025

Imagine not being able to shower, wash your hands, or pour yourself a glass of water in your own home. This was exactly what families in Chortkiv, in Western Ukraine, were suddenly faced with after Russian attacks on the energy grid threatened the city’s water supply.

Now, solar energy is helping to keep the taps running. This week, three solar power plants at the city’s water and wastewater facilities were officially commissioned. With support from Nefco and E5P donors, these cover about 20% of the entire system’s electricity needs – cutting emissions and costs while making sure people here have reliable access to water.

As the first Nefco project to use solar power as the primary energy source for critical municipal infrastructure, Chortkiv is proving that recovery can also mean steps towards a greener future.
